A study found that more than a third of physicians had recently been subjected to verbal abuse including threats, with GPs likely to be targeted.

Half of all doctors have also seen NHS colleagues such as nurses and fellow doctors being mistreated or abused, according to findings published by the British Medical Association (BMA).

The perpetrators were patients or their friends or relatives who accompanied them on a date. Doctors said the abuse occurred most often in their consulting rooms while hospital doctors said it happened in the wards.

The BMA has found that delays in getting treatment and changes in the way the NHS operates as a result of the pandemic are to blame for at least some of the abusive behaviour.

“We are being yelled at and talked to harshly and called unkind and unhelpful, often for things that are not within our control, like hospital queues, and the fact that we have to ask people to be considerate of others to keep everyone safe, by doing things like getting a test for Covid, and not come when they have symptoms of Covid,” said a GP partner in the Southwest.

She recounted how a patient who demanded a PCR test yelled at her because they had a new cough and fever, and how another patient called her an offensive name when she asked them to wait outside the surgery waiting room because they had it. Cough.

“Our local clinic directors are very upset by the constant complaints and bad behavior they leave in droves. The social contract that general practice apparently takes pride in has broken down and people think it’s okay to be rude and unkind,” she added.

The BMA polled 2,400 doctors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland earlier last month. It found that while 37% of respondents had experienced abuse directly in the previous month, more GPs (51%) than hospital doctors (30%) said they had. In addition to:

Hospital medics often saw nurses being abused while 96% of GPs said verbal hostility was usually directed at reception staff.

And 64% believed that the cause of the abuse was the offender’s dissatisfaction with the care they received or the waiting time.

“The past year and a half has been a challenging time for both clinicians and patients, and many clinicians share their patients’ frustration about unfamiliar ways of working, or if waiting times are too long,” said Dr. Richard Vautry, chair of the BMA GP Committee.

Dr Vishal Sharma, chair of the union’s advisors committee, added: “We understand that when people interact with the health service, they are often in a state of pain and grief – as the Covid-19 pandemic increases feelings of anxiety because services are working in various ways, or some delays. treatments.

“However, we can’t allow people to let go of their frustration with a system of individual doctors or colleagues who are really doing their best in the most difficult situations.”

NHS England has condemned the hostility faced by staff. A spokesperson said: “It is unacceptable that NHS staff – who have dedicated their days, nights and weekends to protecting patients in one of the most challenging environments I have encountered – are subjected to abusive, intimidating and violent behaviour.

“The NHS will not tolerate abuse or violence directed against staff and, despite the despicable actions of a minority, the massive support from the public during the pandemic means a great deal to staff, who take pride in helping millions of patients over the past year.”
