School results in Scotland are consistently lower than last year but have shown a sharp rise since 2019, figures published on Tuesday show as the Covid-19 pandemic stalls into its second year.

Students have known their individual scores since the end of June, due to the use of an alternative rating model that focuses more on teacher judgment.

But overall, the rate for students receiving between A and C – known as the achievement rate – fell across all qualifications published by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) on Tuesday.

For the five national qualifications, the achievement rate was 85.8% this year, compared to 89% in 2019-20 – but still well above 78.2% for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Higher attainment decreased from 89.3% to 87.3%, while higher advanced achievement decreased to 90.2% from 93.1%.

Similar to the national 5 attainment average, the higher qualification figure is much higher than the 2018-2019 level, which was only 75%, while the higher advanced rate is up from 80%.

Last year, an alternative evaluation model was also scheduled, but the plan was scrapped after it was found that more than 120,000 entries were downrated due to an algorithm that, among other factors, contributed to past school performance to modify teacher judgment.

Between the use of exams in 2018-2019 and the alternative teacher-led model this year, the national 5, high, and top advanced pass rates rose an average of 10%.

The total number of entries in SQA increased by 8,201 to 660,661, with nearly 137,000 students receiving certificates on Tuesday. Despite the low achievement rate, Education Secretary Shirley Ann Somerville described the results as “robust”, adding that they were “achieved under exceptional circumstances”.
