Sparta, North Carolina – Monday marks one year since a 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred near Sparta, North Carolina.

The strongest earthquake to hit the country in more than a century was felt by thousands on the morning of August 9, 2020.

Officials said there were more than 80,000 reports of people feeling the quake in the Charlotte area.

The earthquake caused a road trip in Gap Civil, North Carolina, and caused bricks to separate from homes along Little River Drive.

Experts said the earthquake was the result of a backslash fault. They form when compressive forces cause a fault plane to move sideways, causing an earthquake.

Experts also said last summer’s earthquake was a rare type of event in the region.

The earthquake occurred about six miles underground, classifying it as a shallow tremor.

Deep earthquakes tend to be felt less at the surface due to their depth.
