Met Office issues crushing verdict on August heat wave

Forecasters dealt a crushing blow to hopes of another heat wave in August despite the recent recovery.

Sun seekers have been in place for most of July with blistering temperatures across Lancashire and the rest of the UK as the final lockdown restrictions ease.

Since the start of the school summer vacation, the weather has been even more battered and lost with frequent yellow weather warnings of torrential rain and thunder.

Bad weather caused floods and blackouts at the beginning of the month, but conditions are starting to improve this week with a high of 27 degrees Celsius expected in some parts of the country over the coming days.

Today (August 10), meteorologists at the Met Office poured cold water on any hope of a heat wave for the rest of the month despite previous reports.

Graham Madge, a Met Office spokesperson, said: “August was essentially a mixed-wealth situation with some areas seeing drier than usual weather, while others saw nearly a month of precipitation in just 10 days.

“We don’t expect to see record weather, as there has certainly been a wetter August in the past, but many areas experienced a period of heavy, intense rain.

“We’re putting this in a low pressure area which is slowly moving across the country bringing the humid conditions that many have seen.”

Mr Madge said that over the next few days the weather is expected to be “more stable” compared to last week.

Many areas will experience brighter and brighter spells with the potential for the temperature to reach the low 20s.

Mr Madge added: “Don’t expect to see heatwave conditions, but rather dry and sunny spells for many.

“However, there may be a small amount of rainfall in Northern Ireland and Scotland as the week progresses.”

Here are the latest Bureau of Meteorology forecasts for the rest of the week in Lancashire covering Blackpool, Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn, Burnley, Hindeburn, Rosendale, Corley, Ripple Valley, South Ripple, Field, Wire, Pendle and West Lanx.

Tonight and tonight:

Any showers of the day fade away as we move into the evening, leaving a dry night with lots of clear spells, but it’s likely fog over higher ground. Chances of rain in the far west during the early hours. The minimum temperature is 13 degrees Celsius.

Wednesday:

A fairly dry start but clouds rush over the area, with rain expected in the afternoon. Clear evening skies give way to sunny spells. The maximum temperature is 20 degrees Celsius.

Forecasts for Thursday to Saturday:

A clear start to Thursday but it will become cloudy in the afternoon with strong winds. Feeling fresh on Friday with a shower. The breeze continues through Saturday with more rain likely.
