President Joe Biden hailed the Senate’s approval of a trillion-dollar infrastructure package as a sign that the Senate can work together on a bipartisan basis.
The Senate passed a bipartisan infrastructure bill of $1 trillion by 69 votes on Tuesday, to be sent to the House of Representatives.
Biden noted that when he first announced his candidacy for president, his desire to work with Republicans was seen as a relic of the past.
“I know compromise is difficult on both sides, but it is important,” he said. “It is essential that democracy be able to function.” “Today, we prove that democracy can still work.”
The bill passed on a bipartisan basis, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and others like Sens Roy Blunt of Missouri, Bill Cassidy of Missouri, and Rob Portman of Ohio joining in.
“I know it wasn’t easy,” he said, “for the Republicans who supported this bill, you’ve shown a lot of courage.”
Portman, who will retire at the end of his term, praised the passage of the legislation before the vote.
“Today is Infrastructure Day,” said Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, who will retire at the end of this term and has been one of the lead negotiators on the legislation.
The bill will invest in public transportation, passenger rail and broadband internet.
“I hope the House moves quickly,” Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said before the vote, noting that the House can move quickly when it wants.
Capito’s words came as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would not bring the bipartisan bill to a vote before the reconciliation bill, which includes Democrats’ big spending priorities, is up for grabs.
“This is the end of the beginning,” Sean Tom Carper of Delaware.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the bill was important, but he also referred to the budget bill Democrats hope to pass and avoid blocking by 51 votes.
“But our country faces other very big and important challenges,” said Mr. Schumer.
Biden reiterated his commitment to the priorities in the $3.5 trillion plan.
