The climb looks good from a first person perspective • Eurogamer.net

The recently released The Ascent is a fantastic and incredibly detailed online role-playing game that plays from a consistent, top-down, isometric perspective. But what happens when you open the camera?

In the video below spotted by Kotaku, playing with Griff Griffin shows us that Neon Giant’s The Ascent looks absolutely fine in first person, with an amazing level of detail on display when viewing the world up close. We see detailed character models, environments, and even items in stores (The Ascent stores are great!). I love the Neuromancer nod, too.

Griff Griffin used a tool called Universal Unreal Engine 4 Unlocker to move the camera (details are in the video description). It’s also great because we see the compelling world of cyberpunk in The Ascent come under close scrutiny. This developer Neon Giant is a studio of only 12 people which makes this even more impressive.

The rise in first person perspective reminds me of Cyberpunk 2077. Of course it is – both games have similar aesthetics. The Ascent is a top-down two-stick shooter, so from a gameplay perspective, it simply won’t work in first-person in its current form, but it’s fun to wonder how you’d play if Neon Giant fell down the path of Cyberpunk 2077.

If you’re wondering about The Ascent, check out Edwin’s great review.
