Aston Villa manager Dean Smith believes Jack Grealish will “thriving at the highest level” after completing his £100m move to Manchester City.
Grealish signed a six-year deal in a record British transfer deal after making it clear his desire to play Champions League football this season, with City releasing a nine-figure clause into his contract to seal the deal.
The 25-year-old made his City debut in the Community Shield’s defeat against Leicester as a substitute just two days after signing, and will be hoping for a better start to his north career in the Premier League against Tottenham on the opening day. this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, former boss Smith revealed he has no doubts about whether the England international will succeed with Manchester City.
He said: “We are all disappointed that Jack chose to leave the football club because he meant so much to all of us, but we all also understand why he left too and we wish him well. Obviously regardless of what time Aston Villa plays.
“He is a unique player and a unique personality and I can honestly say the best player I have worked with. I really enjoyed helping to develop Jack into the person he is today.
“In terms of where Jack can go, he will thrive playing at the highest level. That’s what he was born for.
“We at Aston Villa are probably 18 months behind where we needed to be to keep Jack, but Jack will show his value on the highest stage ever in the Champions League as he did in the European Championship in the summer.”
