The United Kingdom recorded 29,612 new cases of COVID-19 and 104 more coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the latest government figures.
The numbers compare with the 23,510 infections and 146 coronavirus-related deaths reported on Tuesday – the highest daily death toll from COVID-19 since March 12, when 175 deaths were recorded.
Last Wednesday, there were 29,312 cases of infection and 119 deaths.
Meanwhile, 37,511 people received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine – bringing the total to 47,129,400 (89.1% of the adult population).
And 151,143 were stabbed a second time, which means 398,39709 people (75.3%) received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

Health Minister Sajid Javid said plans were underway for the fall booster doses, although Professor Adam Fain, of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization, indicated they would be for a relatively small number of people.
He told BBC Breakfast: “We have been asked to advise on who might receive a booster dose if it is shown to be necessary to provide the boosters.”
“I think it has become quite clear that there is a small group of people whose immune responses to the first two doses are likely to be inadequate — people who are immunosuppressed of one kind or another, perhaps because they are immunocompromised or they have been treated for cancer or A bone marrow transplant or an organ transplant, of that kind.”
Professor Finn also said the reason for extending the rollout of the vaccine to people aged 16 to 17 was due to a small number of serious cases in the age group.
On Tuesday night, NHS workers and their families received a free concert at the O2 Arena in London as Gorillaz returned to the stage.
The band has performed their first gig in front of a live audience since October 2018 and the first live event at full capacity at O2 since March 2020.

Party-goers were asked to test negative for COVID-19 for attendees.
Gorillaz celebrated their more than 20-year career with a track chart covering their seven albums and invited Robert Smith of The Cure, former Joy Division star, New Order star Peter Hook, rapper Slowthai, and Sean Ryder of Happy Mondays on stage.
Meanwhile, Facebook has removed hundreds of accounts linked to a network of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation operating out of Russia.
Advertising agency Fazze sought to pay social media influencers to repost misleading content about the Pfizer vaccine and AstraZeneca, including one claiming that an AstraZeneca strike would turn a person into a chimpanzee.
The plot was exposed after influencers in France and Germany revealed offers sent to them, and 65 Facebook profiles and 243 Instagram accounts were banned after they were traced to Fazze.
