Three-year-old girl dies of suffocation in Asda supermarket

A three-year-old girl died after suffocating in an Asda supermarket.

Emergency services, which included two ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were called to the giant supermarket around 8:48 p.m. on August 10.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital after the incident at Asda in Aintree, Merseyside, but police have now confirmed the girl’s sad death shortly after.

Liverpool Echo reports that the tragedy has not been treated as suspicious and that investigations into the incident are continuing.

A Northwest Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “Two emergency ambulances and a member of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) responded to the 999 call that a child was experiencing a medical emergency at the ASDA on Ormskirk Road, Aintree.

“The call took place at 20.48 yesterday evening. The patient was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.”

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm that emergency services were in Aintree following an incident last night, Tuesday 10 August.

“At approximately 9.50pm the Ambulance Service attended reports of a three-year-old choking inside a lion on Ormskirk Road.

“The child was taken to hospital but unfortunately passed away soon after. The family is being supported by the officers at this sad time.

“The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and investigations are ongoing,” he added.

A file is being prepared for the forensic doctor.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We are shocked and saddened by this incident and send our deepest condolences to the little girl’s family.

“We are grateful to colleagues who provided immediate assistance in the store and will do everything we can to support them.”
