There were gasps online with rumors that two of the world’s best TV stars have finally met.

Sources initially confirmed what we’ve been suspecting all along: Ross and Rachel are happily dating after 25 years of screen co-stars on Friends.

But to me, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer’s romantic reunion only proves one thing: The dating pool in Hollywood is so small that you eventually complete an entire episode and end up picking someone at random, like a particularly panic game for musical chairs.

We saw the same thing with Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, who are back together after their high-profile engagement was shattered to pretty little pieces in 2004.

Now 17 years later, they can’t get enough of each other — and conveniently enough, there’s always a door or two on hand to catch the last sunset hug.

But our strange obsession with nostalgia doesn’t serve us well. We left the team of friends nearly 20 years ago – also in 2004 – with characters Jen-An and David who cemented their love when Rachel got off the famous plane for France.

So why do we yearn for stars to return to the roles we knew so well for? Is it a respite from the brutal world we see around us – countries literally on fire, alpacas riddled with tuberculosis facing death squad, and a government minister who doesn’t remember his own Level 1 results fuming about more talented young men getting A*o’s?

Or does it speak more about our relationship to the past — and how quickly we can fall back into comforts, like baggy pants that have seen better days?

Either way, for a woman like Jane who has exclusively dated famous men… wouldn’t she just want a break from the rigors of it all? There are nearly 3.8 billion men in the world, love – feel free to set your Tinder location parameters within five miles of Bel Air.

There’s also the problem of fans being so desperate for Jane and David (Javed? Denver? Schwimmerston?) to bond just as Ross and Rachel did – forgetting how awful they were together. Ross’ jealousy, his anger issues, casual sexism, homophobia, disregard for Rachel’s career and intellect, his lies…
