A four-year-old boy was attacked by a dog outside a Sainsbury’s supermarket in front of onlookers.

He was taken to hospital but West Midlands Police confirmed that his injuries are not believed to be life-changing.

Sergeant Robert Pritchard, of Wolverhampton Police, said: “The child has been taken to hospital for treatment but his physical injuries are not believed to be life-changing and we wish him well in a speedy recovery.

“He must have been very scared. The dog, believed to be an American Bully XL, was seized by officers at the scene and is now being looked after in our homes.”

Onlookers said the little boy ran alongside the dog – believed to be a large American Bulldog – towards his father outside the store before the animal jumped on him.

A supermarket worker claimed the animal belonged to a homeless man who often sat outside the Kenmare store.

The worker told The Mirror: “There is a homeless man who always sits next to the supermarket with his dog. He just went to the kid running.

There were two police cars, a paramedic and an ambulance here. It looked bad. He was just a little boy and the dog was much bigger than him. He was bitten on the upper leg from what I understand.”

But the dog’s owner denied that Donnie, 11 months, had bitten the boy.

He said, “The kid came running and stunned Donnie. Donnie jumped up and knocked him over. It wasn’t a bite – it’s grazing. The police brought my dog. They said I’d take him back a few weeks if he behaved himself. I can’t apologize anymore.”
