WhatsApp will transfer messages from iPhone to Android

WhatsApp appeared during Samsung’s Unpacked event, and revealed that it will soon be possible to transfer messages between iOS and Android devices, starting with Samsung Galaxy phones.

As of today, WhatsApp allows you to easily transfer messages between iPhones or between Android devices, making it easy to continue your conversations after an upgrade. So far, though, switching from iOS to Android, or vice versa, means losing your conversation history.

As Engadget mentioned, WhatsApp is gaining the ability to export and import messages between devices. Starting in the coming weeks, the ability to import messages will debut on Samsung Galaxy phones, specifically those running Android 10 or later. In the end, you will be able to transfer your WhatsApp messages between phones freely, no matter who made it.

In the early preview shots that WhatsApp shared, we see that importing messages may only work when you initially set up a new device on your account.

Import chat history.

We need permission to restore your chats.

You will not be able to import later if you skip this step.

This was no small undertaking on the part of WhatsApp, which required cooperation from operating system developers and phone makers to properly and securely transmit encrypted messages, voice memos and photos.

Our APK Insight team saw signs of the WhatsApp import/export feature in the Android Data Recovery Tool, which indicates that it will be located in Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats to Android. This integration indicates that Google has been making it easier than ever to switch to Android from iOS.
