The new one-click button will mean workers can report phishing emails directly to the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), in an effort to crack down on cybercrime.

People can already redirect scams to the NCSC’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS), but it is hoped that the ease of one button will encourage wider use.

GCHQ’s cybersecurity department has published instructions on how corporate IT departments can add the button to Outlook on Microsoft 365.

Cybercrime has cost organizations more than £5 million in the past 13 months.

Among the most common types of phishing, employees are tricked into downloading malware that appears to come from IT support, clones of login pages that steal personal details, and emails with fake alerts from common workplace software.

Dr Ian Levy, Technical Director of the National Center for Sports Security, said: “The pandemic has shown that cybercriminals will stop at nothing to attack and defraud citizens and businesses.

“But the email suspicious reporting service has also shown that the British public can help us fight this scourge.

“This new report button makes it easier for companies using Microsoft 365 to enable their employees to report fraudulent emails and further help fight cybercrime.

“The more people we report scams, the safer everyone becomes.”

In July, the average case reported to the National Center for Sports Security took four hours to clear.

“Unfortunately, criminals will use every opportunity possible to deceive people into handing over their personal and financial data,” said Clinton Blackburn, interim chief of the City of London Police.

Phishing messages provide criminals with a gateway to obtain this information, which they will then use to commit fraud.
