Man City has a perfect contingency plan if he doesn’t sign Harry Kane

[ad_1]

Maybe it will happen.

Perhaps Manchester City will raise the money that Tottenham want. Perhaps Daniel Levy will soften and let his club’s paint go for a direct contender in the Premier League. Perhaps Harry Kane will arrive in Manchester, adding the best striker in the league to the best team in the league.

Perhaps the Blues will then go on to hold the Premier League and finally get their hands on the Champions League trophy.

But then again, maybe not.

With just three days left for City’s title defense to mount in a perfect bit of sarcasm at Spurs – and then another 18 days before the transfer window closes – it is increasingly likely that the club will not get their man this summer.

City’s primary objective was to sign a star striker to replace Sergio Aguero. The club has been budgeting and team building with perfect planning for years to be in a position to spend heavily on a squad this summer.

Indeed, Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak clearly set the goal in his end-of-season interview, saying: “We are losing a very important legend in Sergio Aguero, very tough boots, but I am sure we will find the right player to fill that boots.”

Even at the beginning of June, it seemed odd that City would pin their colors on the mast publicly, exposing themselves to disappointment if they failed to get a striker.

The £100m signing of Jack Grealish is sure to offset some of the disappointment, but it’s easy to see some resentment among fans if the club fail to bring in a new striker after letting their record scorer go for nothing.

It could really happen.

Kane played his card by making his displeasure with Spurs even more evident after his late return to training, but he put Levy in a corner. If Kane sold now, it would be obvious to any goofy star that all they needed to do to make their way was stomp their feet, get abs and they would get their way.

The England captain still has three years left on his contract with Tottenham. As a result, the club is not under pressure to sell and can simply demand ridiculous money for its services. Fees between £130 and £160m have been promoted and it is hard to see City making a lot of money, especially soon after they broke the British transfer record.

So what should City do over the next year if they fail to sign Kane this summer? Well, there is no need to jump straight to panic stations.

It should be remembered that Aguero spent most of last season on the sidelines and had no effect on his title win.

Winning the Premier League title is likely to be more difficult this time around, especially as Chelsea prepare to bring in prolific Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United have added goals in Jadon Sancho and will look to not charge too much with his arrival. Raphael Varane.

But City will still have more quality players and profound strength than anyone else in the league, which has allowed them to delve deeper into many competitions for years now. Pep Guardiola’s team won the league last season by 12 points, 21 points ahead of Chelsea.

The London club may be able to make up for this gap with Thomas Tuchel in charge from the start and has a psychological advantage over City after winning the Champions League final, but it will still be a huge task.

If the striker doesn’t turn up before the window closes, next season will be Gabriel Jesus’ time to prove he’s ready to make the move.

The Brazilian had always understood his role as Aguero’s replacement, but was desperate to stand out from his shadow. If he had the chance, he would have to make sure he wasn’t blinded by the light.

Jesus has been a very good player in recent years and it’s easy to forget that he’s still 24 years old, with plenty of room for improvement. But he averaged a goal every 204.6 minutes last season, and he will need to increase it if he is to make the spot his forever.

But even if Jesus provided another powerful, if not astonishing, 14 goals, the good thing for City is that they spread the goals around the squad last season. Some 16 players netted City at least once last season, with seven of them reaching double digits – the defenders even conceded 15 goals.

So while an end player like Kane would be welcome, especially in the big moments, it doesn’t mean that City are short on goals.

Besides Jesus, there are also plenty of players who can work through the middle. Raheem Sterling looked fresh after his Euro 2020 campaign and proved he can still score in the moments that matter most. He and Ferran Torres have proven they can stretch defenses through the middle by running past the last man.

While the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva have all been hired for the wrong ninth to great effect, it’s a role Grealish will no doubt be able to play as well.

With so much flexibility, Guardiola will still have plenty of options to launch killer attacks next season if Kane does not arrive.

After the season is over, depending on City’s performance and what they’ve accomplished, they can then assess and see if a new striker is needed.

If so, he will likely go back to the same shortlist. Kane will have a year less on his contract and Spurs will not be in such a strong position, making a sale more likely and possibly cheaper.

But more interestingly, the release clause for Erling Haaland will come into effect, which is said to be €75m. Relative deal.

The Norwegian sensation is much younger than Kane, has a connection to the club through his father and appears tough in the penalty area, so City could turn their attention to him instead.

So, if the worst is the worst and City can’t get their man this summer, it sure isn’t the end of the world.
