Regional authorities in Sicily recorded temperatures of 48.8 degrees Celsius (119.8 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday when an anticyclone dubbed “Lucifer” swept through, which if confirmed would be a new record high in Italy and Europe.
The extreme temperature was recorded near Syracuse, surpassing the Italian record of 48.5 degrees, set in Sicily in 1999, and the 1977 record of 48 degrees in Eleusis, Greece.
A spokesman for Italy’s national weather service said the result still needed to be validated, while the World Meteorological Organization, which ranks Greece’s record as the highest in Europe, did not respond to requests for comment.
Elsewhere in southern Italy, the anticyclone was expected to cause mercury to rise to 39-42 degrees before sweeping north, with weekend temperatures reaching 40 degrees in the central regions of Tuscany and Lazio, which includes Rome.
As the capital heated up on Wednesday, tourists sought shade and water.
“I kind of like it, it’s the goal of summer to be hot and sweaty and just enjoy it!” said Nora Vert, 20, from France.
