“Anyway, she left us and all I want to say is that I personally will miss her very much and I know our industry in general will miss her very much.

“Her talent, her joy, all that she would have stayed with us all. While we remember her, she will always be with us.”

Born in Hertfordshire in 1937, Stubbs has worked in film, television and theater for decades, including her most recent role as Mrs. Hudson on the BBC series Sherlock opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

Her agent, Rebecca Blonde, said: “We are deeply saddened that not only have we lost an amazing actress, her career on screen and stage, spanning more than 50 years, has been extraordinarily diverse, from Till Death Us Do Part to Sherlock, as well as performances that never fail. You forget the West End, the Old Vic, the Donmar Warehouse, the Sheffield Crucible and the National Theatre, but also a sinisterly funny friend, elegant, elegant, graceful, generous, kind and enduring.

“She was also a very respected and on show artist. We will miss her very much and always remember her.”
