The home of the man accused of betraying Britain’s secrets to Russia has emerged as a strange shrine to the Soviet state.

David Smith, 57, is currently in a German cell accused of selling secrets to the Russians.

But in his quiet corner of Potsdam, a city on the outskirts of the sprawling capital Berlin, he was known for his love of all things Russian.

Pictures taken inside his modest ground-floor apartment show it filled with everything from a modern Russian flag to bookshelves stacked with volumes about the nation’s history and battles in World War II.

There are also books about the Nazis, including two about Hitler’s fearsome 12 Tank Division who committed war crimes.

These are oddly pressed alongside teddy bears and spy novels by John Le Carre and written by notorious conspiracy theorist David Ike.

David Smith’s home has been the subject of an hours-long forensic investigation.

Outside Smith’s old silver, battered, Ford Fiesta still parked, it has been outlined how his license plate demonstrated his obsession with Russia.

He read book B: RU1801, which was expected to be a reference to Russia and the year Tsar Alexander I came to power during the Napoleonic Wars.

He is a hero in the country for expelling Napoleon from Russia and is worshiped in some far-right circles.

Among the other memorabilia displayed inside his apartment are Soviet military hats featuring hammer and sickle emblems on a red star surrounded by a wreath.

There are also military insignia of the Russian Baltic, Black Sea, North and Pacific Fleets, and a Russian military insignia that partially reads “technical battalion”.

The 57-year-old’s home has been the subject of an hours-long search as special officers gather evidence, finding John le Carrey’s Cold War spy novel A Murder of Quality and at least three Soviet military hats.

A Soviet-era military beret can be seen on the head of a cuddly toy Rottweiler.

The photographs also show other memorabilia that include insignia of the Russian Baltic, Black Sea, North and Pacific Fleets and Russian military insignia.

Smith had books on the history of World War I, including several books in German, and The Red Party – a memoir of a Soviet fighter behind enemy lines in World War II.

Other titles on his bookshelves were Military History of Germany, Für Fölk and Führer: Memoirs of a Veteran of the 1st Panzer Division SS Libestarte, Somme, Dieppe 1942, Anthony Beaufort Berlin, Fighters and Bombs, Fighting the Eastern Front, For the Fatherland, Frontline Ukraine , The Red Road from Stalingrad.

The biography of Reinhard Heydrich – the SS official and the main instigator behind the Holocaust – was also visible, as was Operation Bodenplatte about the Luftwaffe’s final trench attack on Allied air forces in 1945.

The apartment contained plenty of other non-military items, including three volumes on embroidery, one on psychology, and one titled gender. The complete illustrated guide. There was also a PlayStation.

It follows reports describing Smith as a “plump bald” man with “extremist” views of the far right.

Neighbors said he is “friendly, smiling and polite” and drives a Ford Fiesta.

He was kidnapped on Tuesday in a joint operation between the British counter-terrorism command and German security forces.

He is suspected of selling secret documents from the embassy to Russian spies for money and is believed to have been suspected by MI5.

Sources said that the process of his arrest was “led by the intelligence” and took several weeks.

He appeared before an investigative judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe on Wednesday, where he was ordered to remain in detention pending further investigations.

The suspected British spy is a “bulky, right-wing bald man who drives a Ford Fiesta,” the British spy suspect who was named for the first time after his arrest in Germany over his connections to Russia.
