Will the race for the Premier League title be wide open?

Roy Keane has admitted that Chelsea’s £97m signing of Romelu Lukaku has opened the door to the Premier League title race, suggesting they could face a serious title challenge.

The Blues sealed a club record transfer deal to bring Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge after scoring 24 goals in Serie A last season, and the Nerazzurri named Serie A champions last season.

The 28-year-old has signed a long-term contract as he prepares to start a second stint in west London, after becoming Thomas Tuchel’s second summer signing.

Chelsea’s need to sign a striker has become even more desperate after defensive midfielder Jorginho finished the season as their top scorer with seven goals.

The Italian even beat a total of £47.5m from striker Timo Werner with six goals, while Germany star Kai Havertz has struggled to score just four times in the league.

Tuchel managed to lead the West London side to fourth place in the Premier League after arriving at the club in January.

But now, armed with Lukaku, Kane believes the Champions League winners will be a force to be reckoned with – and directs them to be the main contenders to take Manchester City off the top.

Speaking on The Overlap, Kane said: “I’ve been looking forward to the last year or two where I’ve been out and out of the scorers’ list, but Lukaku is giving them a great opportunity.”

“I know Liverpool have a lot of players coming back, but I will still look at City and Chelsea.”

The German national team switched to a 3-4-3 method that turned the team that leaked goals under Frank Lampard into a defensive force, scoring 19 clean sheets in 30 games.

And they were defeated to third place by Liverpool, who recovered to finish the tenth season undefeated after a disturbing slip under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp, who lost six consecutive games at home.

But with Virgil van Dijk back in action and the Reds bolstered by the £35m arrival of Ibrahim Konate from Leipzig, Klopp’s men should be in a position to contend for the title.

Manchester United will be keen to put up a serious challenge to their top-four rivals after the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane were confirmed as the second signing.

However, Kane does not believe the two sides will be able to keep up with City or Chelsea unless they back their side before the August 31 transfer deadline.

“Unless United or Liverpool pull something out of the bag in the next week or two with some great signings, I can’t see beyond City or Chelsea,” he added.

Tuchel’s men beat Villarreal in the European Super Cup on penalties, with Kepa Arrizabalaga the hero after saving two penalties to claim victory in Belfast on Wednesday.

Tuchel, who drafted a new two-year contract in June after impressing Chelsea’s board, agreed with Kane’s assessment that his side could position themselves in contention for their first league title since 2017.

But he warned his players that they must learn to be consistent or risk losing the first prize in English football.

“we [will] try to be there [at the top]said the 47-year-old.

“Why? Because we have proven in more than half a year that we can do that and that would be the exact approach.

“Can we anticipate what others will do? No, but City showed what it means to be champion. Liverpool showed what it was like to be a champion.

“You need consistency at the highest level in the toughest league in the world and that is the standard.

“We’re here to bridge the gap not just for half a year but for the whole year.”

The elegant Edward Mendy responded to the Kepa Arrizabalaga sub-team as he demanded that Chelsea accept the Super Cup by Thomas Tuchel after his starring role in Chelsea’s Super Cup win.
