Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola changes course when asked about Harry Kane transfer

Pep Guardiola has refused to discuss Manchester City’s interest in signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane ahead of the two sides meeting at the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The Blues want to sign Kane before the transfer window closes on August 31, but Tottenham have so far refused to deal with their captain.

City may make a new offer for the England captain after the weekend meeting between the two sides, but after speaking of the club’s interest in the 28-year-old last week, Guardiola did not provide an update today.

“I answered that question in the previous press conference. He’s a Tottenham player, I made an exception last time, and I usually don’t talk about transfers, it’s none of my business,” Guardiola said.

Kane has said he wants to leave Tottenham but City will have to exceed the £100m they paid Jack Grealish to get the deal done.

The striker is back in full training at Tottenham today but coach Nuno Espirito Santo has yet to confirm whether he will play against the club he wants to join.

If City do not complete a deal with Kane, they will start the season with only Gabriel Jesus as a well-known striker, with Sergio Aguero leaving the club on a free transfer this summer.

They won the title and reached the Champions League final last season without major contributions from either of them and Guardiola can continue to use a system without a striker core this season.

“We play with famous strikers with Aguero and Gabriel. Unfortunately, Aguero was injured, and when he was always fit he was an important part of the team,” he said.

“He was incredibly recognized. Unfortunately, he was injured, he was a proper striker and Gabriel a proper striker. Sometimes we play differently, but the intention is one to control the game and score as much as possible, with or without a striker.”

If City lose to Kane, it could give Jesus a chance to claim this season and Guardiola is confident he can make an impact.

“His mind was always in the right place,” he said. “Gabriel is a very important player for us, and he can play as a striker or on a larger scale.” “He’s been incredibly key to these many years of success every season.”
