According to the antiquities agency, the divers “got an unexpected surprise when they discovered amazing artifacts.”
Originally discovered in 2013, a base may have once located the harbor entrance below the Ottoman “Tower of the Flies” lighthouse.
The Antiquities Authority said: “This summer, we returned to further research and excavate the remains of the lighthouse.
“The lighthouse can be seen today near Acre’s marina, protruding above the water on a small island.”
While excavating the sea floor, archaeologists also found scattered remains of a Roman merchant ship from the fourth century.
