Jimmy Anderson supports ‘superhuman’ Joe Root to break England chef record | England cricket team

After Joe Root topped Graham Gooch’s 8,900 Test score, Jimmy Anderson said he “totally” backed the England captain to make it to the top of the list. This feat would require Root to repair his predecessor, Aleister Cook, which totals 12,472.

“Every time he comes out, it’s just a row, and today he looked great from the first ball,” Anderson said. Root reached the tuck against India at Lords with England 23 for two – and with Mohamed Sarraj in a hat-trick, after Dom Sibley and Haseeb Hamid fell in successive deliveries.

But Root survived the hat-trick ball and led England through choppy waters to leave them 119 to three on closing, chasing India’s first-game result of 364.

“When you see your captain come out and play like that on a three-ball, it seems to have a really calming effect on the dressing room, so I’m sure there’s a lot to come of it,” Anderson said.

“Joe has been fantastic throughout his career and in the last 12 months in particular. With all that we have been through with the pandemic and the pressures on this team, to be able to lead the team and perform the way he has been, is nothing short of a superhuman.”

Anderson, who has added his name to the honors board again with his seventh of five at Lords, also had words of encouragement for his fellow England bowlers. He said the group was “still trying to feel our way and get some rhythm” after their lack of red ball cricket.

Anderson, 39, had an injury concern the day before this test began, having had a stiffness check in his quad. But the bowler said the Lord’s Land where he first appeared in the test and took the first five test ever “seems to bring my best”.

He said: “Surely the last few times I’ve been here you think: Will this be the last time I play here?” “So I hope this won’t be my last time here, and I hope this won’t be my last time on the honor board.”
