Elon Musk is blowing up chip makers due to supply problems

Tesla founder Elon Musk has chosen two of the world’s largest chip makers to thwart production of electric cars for his brand.

Musk said Tesla was “operating under severe supply chain constraints” amid a global chip shortage that has hit auto producers around the world.

“By far the most problematic is Renesas & Bosch,” he said on Twitter.

Car producers are growing frustrated with the global shortage of chips as they compete for supply with manufacturers of phones, computers and game consoles.

As production outages continue, the auto industry is no longer just blaming the global shortage, but instead is looking for individual chip companies to take the blame.

Earlier this year, Ford described the March fire at its Reinas plant in Japan as a significant risk to its production schedules.

Volkswagen has also been in talks with suppliers, including Germany’s Bosch, about the possibility of claiming compensation related to the chip shortage.

In an earnings call in July, Musk said Tesla had rewritten its car software to support alternative chips.

But his comments on Thursday suggested the company’s attempt to avoid the problem had not worked.

Musk made the comments in response to a tweet from Kathy Wood of Ark Investment, who was commenting on Tesla’s significant drop in domestic deliveries of vehicles made in China in July.

Neither Bush nor Renesas immediately responded to requests for comment.

Tesla shares fell 0.5 percent in early New York trading.

However, the company received a boost when Carson Block of Muddy Waters Capital, a longtime Tesla critic, said it underestimated Musk’s ability to raise capital and attract shareholders.

In a shareholder letter, Block said his company’s multi-year bet against Tesla had been sent to “heaven.”

Although Block said he didn’t like Musk’s “narcissism” at first, he added that “the market value, the luster, the loyalty of Elon, are still there.”
