The 24-year-old was found unconscious on Bold Street downtown.
Paramedics attended the victim and were called at about 1 am.
The 24-year-old was treated and then taken to hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Chief Detective Paul Barry revealed that the victim was from Northern Ireland and was visiting family in the city.
He was also with three of his friends when he is believed to have been assaulted on Hanover Street.
Police called any taxi drivers of the rank of Hackney Taxi nearby on Hanover Street if they had information or dashcam footage.
Police have now opened a full investigation while the man is being treated for serious head injuries.
