It’s not a done deal yet, but the Cañada College men’s soccer team has a fairly formidable opponent in their pre-season sparring schedule.
Set to play the Earthquakes Academy U23 in Cañada on Tuesday, August 24 at 4 p.m., the second of two high-profile melee opponents the Colts are hoping to face before the 2021 season, as they also have JASA Redwood City in their court. Saturday August 21 schedule.

It will be a good warm-up for an eight-game non-conference schedule against several seeded opponents before the Cañada Conference opens on September 28.
“The pre-season schedule is tough,” said Kenya’s coach Eric Gaspard. “No doubt about it, everyone is fine. You look at the first seven, eight teams, each of them is an extension team. It’s a very good schedule. So we’ll find out how satisfied we are very early on here.”
Now in its second incarnation, the Earthquakes U23 development team was overhauled earlier this year. The team pre-existed until 2014, when he transferred to Burlingame High School to take over the Burlingame Dragons banner. The Dragons were disbanded after the 2017 season.
With California’s San Mateo County Community College using some of the strictest protocols throughout the coronavirus pandemic in terms of access to its three campuses, inviting a non-college team will require stricter guidelines. Turlock-based Earthquakes U23 squad has a brawl schedule at West Valley College- Saratoga Sat, August 21.
“We’re still working on some protocols,” Gaspard said. “I hope it works.”
Gaspar said he reached out to Earthquakes Academy in hopes of finding a pre-season match. This level of competition is not uncommon for Cañada as preparation for the regular fall season. In previous years, the Colts fought the field against teams from Silicon Valley Football Academy and the De Anza Force.
“It naturally becomes beneficial,” Gaspard said. “You play against some of these kids, and you recruit some of these kids…so a lot of community colleges play these teams at non-conferences, or in the spring.”
The 2021 season marks Gaspar’s 10th season at the helm of the Colts, who are looking to return for their first fall season since 2019. The coronavirus pandemic has cost them the Fall 2020 season. An extremely shortened brawl season played out in the spring of 2021, as Cañada’s mildly shortlisted roster of 20 men on the field against the Academy of Art-SF and Menlo College.
“I am proud of the men who have been with us since March 20,” Gaspard said. “I remember we just played – we were at Notre Dame de Namur, we just played our first match of the spring… Then everything stopped the following Saturday. So, I’m proud of these 15-20 guys. … Looking at That, I would say, is a very good group of guys who have committed to this process.”
With the current season approaching, Cañada returned to a full roster of 25 players, including three goalkeepers. Gaspar is still in the process of finalizing the list, with tests stretching over the past week.
Axel Valle (Menlo-Atherton) and Ryan Paiva (El Camino) are returning for their sophomore seasons.
“There is a core group here, a lot of them dating back to 2019, some of them have been with us since the pandemic started… and I am excited to train them,” Gaspard said.
Cañada returns to school August 18 with some courses held on campus, some of which are still conducted remotely. The Colts football teams, along with the women’s squad, and baseball were allowed to train on campus during the final phase of the pandemic.
“We’re planning for the fall season,” Gaspard said. “We plan to meet all protocol and game obligations. That is what we plan.”
Before the Colts Conference opens on September 28th on the coast against Las Positas, they have to deal with a difficult schedule other than the conference. She is scheduled to take Cañada on the Feather River, Marine College, the San Joaquin Delta, Santa Rosa, Fullerton, Fresno City, and Napa Valley.
“I think it’s going to be a good test, there’s no doubt about that,” Gaspard said. “We just kind of focus on us, get fit and get back in. It’s been a long time.”
