Iron Man Joe Root leads England over India in an interesting second Test

If there is one word to describe test cricket in the English language in recent years, it hasn’t been “normal”. This is an aspect that has a practically symbiotic relationship with unpredictability, hopeless one minute, dominant the next. Both were thrown for 67 and chased 358 for the win – and that was just one match.

The third day at Lourdes cannot be described in these terms; There were no flashy crashes or bunnies pulling out of the hats, just the steady buildup of runs, the occasional wicket miss, and the slow, satisfying escalation of anticipation in a test that grew more intriguing with each passing day.

However, there was nothing natural in the performance of Joe Root, who battled during the day to take his side from a deficit of 245 at the start of play to a lead in the first 27 innings. In the process, he scored a goal. Fantastic 180 didn’t come out, again almost single-handedly carrying the English batting.

Unequivocally that this is a common root. He’s now scored five hundred Tests in 2021, and that’s his 22nd overall, which means only Kevin Petersen and Alastair Cook – with 23 and 33 respectively – have more for England. The root that seemed to struggle to turn the fifties into hundreds is clearly gone; Six times this year he’s made half a century, five times turning them into hundreds.

In total, he struggled to get 321 balls, the giant spent eight hours and 49 minutes curling up, slowly pushing the elephant up the hill, pulling England back out of the doldrums on the first frustrating day and out beyond the Great-Elysian Fields on the fourth and fifth day As any outcome seems possible, the conclusion is impossible to predict but no doubt it appears very clear in retrospect.

As extraordinary as this rescue sounded, there was one-off support elsewhere for Root, notably from fellow Yorkshireman, Jonny Bairstow, the pair hitting during the first session to take England to 216-3 at lunch – the progress appears to be smooth but they are still slipping by an amount 149.

Bairstow had made it half a century before the break, but did not survive long in the afternoon session, falling into the trap of the more obvious short ball from Mohamed Serraj to repeatedly fling the ball to Virat Kohli on slip.

Just eight balls away from the second new ball, it was a somewhat mindless end to Bairstow’s excellent innings, with England still trailing by 135, threatening to allow India to return to the game.

And for not doing so is thanks to the eternal Root. England’s captain brought his hundred in the eighty-second, spurning a risky song to bring a packed lord to her feet. However, there was no indication that he intended to stop there.

Backed by first Gus Butler and then Moeen Ali, the latter looking more comfortable in the frizz than the former, the root continued to throw off the landmarks. He worked his way up after 9,000 test runs, brought in his 150, and even saw a second triple ball in the match – Sam Curran’s golden duck after Moeen was sent off but failed to keep the captain off his stride.

To indicate how well things are going with Root at the moment, this was the seventh time he had faced over 300 deliveries in test roles — four of which came this year. By the time he left undefeated at closing, his average was well over fifty.

England’s innings concluded with the last ball of the day – Mohammed Al Shami bowling James Anderson for a 16-ball brave duck, most of which were aimed at his body and head.

Thanks to Root, they went into the final two days of this match by a precious 27 runs, buoyed by their captain’s heroics and great test preparation. The way things are going now is not yet discovered.
