Figures found by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) warned the government of a high risk of injury. They are now under pressure to end a nationwide campaign to boost rail travel safety.

Two rounds of auditions took place at London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly Station.

Hardly touched surfaces, such as elevator handles, were scanned and sampled for an hour to test for the airborne virus.

These tests were also carried out on trains running between stations to check for Covid.

Tests found no trace of the virus, but scientists cautioned that this does not mean that Covid is not spreading.

Last summer, in July 2020, the RSSB revealed that for an average of 11,000 flights in the UK, there was only one Covid-19 infection.

Recent numbers showing the risk of infection are rising dramatically, as shown by data from the team’s bimonthly briefings.
