Alan Shearer praises Manchester United duo Fred and Scott McTominay against Leeds

The Manchester United midfield quartet received praise from Alan Shearer for his role in the 5-1 win over Leeds.

Bruno Fernandes scored his first hat-trick for the club while Paul Pogba scored four assists in the match as United reached the top of the league in the opening weekend of the new season.

Fred and Scott McTominay were also notable in the win, adding the Brazilian to Mason Greenwood’s goal to complete the win.

But despite the big win and scoring five goals, former Newcastle striker Shearer was peppered with the most defensive duo often dubbed “McFred” by fans.

Speaking as an analyst for today’s game, Shearer said: “They looked very fit and sharp. Understanding both roles in the team was fantastic, escaping the ball and finishing the match.

“Bruno and Pogba are rightly going to grab the headlines, but Fred and McTominay also played their part, whether it was the tackle, whether the ball was finished, or the weight of the pass. It was fantastic.

“McTominay was allowed to take the lead early in the game, and a pass to Pogba, it should have been at the back of the net but we’ll forgive him because he had four assists.”

Pogba’s pass was a major factor in the game as he made four goals and generally turned the show after starting on the left side in the absence of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

And Shearer was lavish in his praise of Pogba’s delicious pass that set Greenwood up 2-1.

He added: “The first goal, the weight of the pass, the first touch is great and the finish is on the left. Leeds couldn’t meet him.

“If you thought the first pass was good, look at the second. Again, running back, timing is great, Greenwood looked at the goal and the goalkeeper has absolutely no chance. Touches, turns, weight of passes. Comprehension, timing of run, Running behind. I thought the four of them had a great game. What a start for Manchester United.”
