Android 12 adjusts adaptive charging, pixel reaches 100% alert level

With the December 2020 Drop Feature, Google has made it so that your Pixel phone will charge slowly at night to keep the battery healthy. Pixel users have had or lost experiences with Adaptive Charging, and now it looks like Google has tweaked how it works on Android 12.

On Android 11, this nighttime adaptive capability quickly charges your Pixel phone to 80% and then slows it down, thus preserving battery health. However, for some, the slower speed still gets their phone to 100% several hours before they wake up at the scheduled alarm time.

Google is clearly being very careful with this “smart” feature to avoid waking users up to a phone that isn’t fully charged. This will undoubtedly be a bad experience, and it comes because Google is already limiting adaptive charging to Pixel 4 and later, while telling users that they should plug in after 9pm and get an alarm between 5 and 10am

With Android 12, Pixel owners note that charging after 80% happens much slower. A pair of reports on r/android_beta note how devices now reach a full charge 30 to 90 minutes before the morning alarms go off. This is hours after the current behavior. While it was observed with Beta 4, the change may have been implemented earlier in the preview.

Adaptive charging is now eight months old, and Google has likely got enough real-world usage data and end-user feedback to fine-tune the capacity with a focus on keeping the battery more healthy.

Be sure to respond in the comments below if you notice this improved adaptive charging behavior on Pixel phones running Android 12. You can check Settings > Battery > Battery usage when your device reaches 100%.
