President Ghani fled Afghanistan with the Taliban’s incursion into Kabul.
His departure today dashes US hopes for an orderly transition of power. A Taliban spokesman said they acted to prevent looting in the capital while the Afghan National Police had vanished.
The Afghan Foreign Ministry confirmed that the president had left by air this afternoon, but said it did not know where his plane would land.
Helicopters fly all day over the city to evacuate international staff from foreign embassies to Kabul’s civilian airport, the only way out of Afghanistan still in government hands after the Taliban seized the last border crossing with Pakistan.
Russia announced that it would not evacuate its embassy, and said it was “ready to cooperate.”
