Callum Wilson vows in the locker room after defensive accidents against West Ham

Callum Wilson insists Newcastle United don’t need to be told of their need to improve their defense after displaying second-half terror against West Ham.

Wilson had put his team ahead early to send fans into ecstasy at St James’ Park, and the Magpies led 2-1 in the break.

But after Newcastle started the second half in sluggish fashion, a 21-minute spell cost them any hope of points on the first day of the campaign.

Speaking for today’s game, Wilson said afterwards: “Everyone is frustrated, first game of the season you always want to get off to a good start.

“To concede three goals after going up front, we will have to tackle them and get back to defense as a team.

“It was a great special moment and he scored the first goal.

“It was a great feeling but he was disappointed right after the assignment.

“A bittersweet day for me.”

Wilson can at least say he is elusive as the club’s No. 9 with a goal in the Premier League so early in the season.

He said: “It was a great feeling, I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time and number nine is just a creative number, I want to do it fair.

“We put ourselves back on top but the most frustrating thing was giving up three.

“We need to stop the back door and we will always be a threat going forward.

“We have to build on the last year and it’s a process, game by game but not like we did today.

“First days, first match to clean up the cobwebs and we go again for the next match.”

United’s next match will be away to Aston Villa next Saturday.
