The Upper Bure is one of only 210 chalk streams in the world, 160 of which are in the UK, but the wildlife in this environment is deteriorating and the waterway has widened beyond its original meandering course.
Work will be carried out over the next four years to return the stream, which rises at Milton Constable and flows into the Velbridge and Blickling properties of the National Trust, back to its original meandering course.
Trees will be planted and corridors created to support wildlife, with groups of man-made wetlands, ditches and ponds added along the riverbed.
It is hoped that the plans will help the population of water mice as well as snakes, fish and dragonflies.
Country images of a top mullet are described in Betjeman’s 1954 poem “Norfolk,” where he wrote: “The bosom of a mullet that is grassy, a whisper and watery Norfolk sound, tells all the lighted reeds around.”
Ms. Long said: “Seeing a clear chalk stream rippling over pebbles and full of fish is something we should all have the opportunity to experience. The more we involve people, the more likely they are to protect these places in the future. We want people back to love rivers.”
