COVID UK: Do adults who are being double stabbed still need to self-isolate?

For months, we have all been afraid of hearing this ominous order from the NHS Covid app or being told from Test and Trace that we have to self-quarantine.

This has resulted in companies struggling to find employees, particularly in the hospitality sector, and shelves in supermarkets becoming empty as there are fewer delivery drivers and other staff to restock.

However, from Monday, August 16, things will change in England – allowing many to breathe a sigh of relief as the UK gets closer than ever to a semblance of normalcy.

Below is a summary of the new rules.

From Monday, double-exposed individuals under the age of 18 in England will no longer need to self-isolate if they are identified as having close contact with someone with Covid-19.

The NHS Covid app will be updated in line with new guidelines on self-isolation for close contacts.

If you are identified as a close contact, a PCR test is recommended, although this is not a legal requirement.

Anyone with a PCR test result will be legally required to self-isolate, regardless of their vaccination status.

People who are double stabbed are exempt from isolation 14 days after their second dose of the vaccine.

This means that if you’re going to get a jab on Monday, you’ll still need to self-isolate if you’re identified as having close contact with someone with Covid-19 for the next two weeks.

The rules regarding travel have not changed. For example, you will still need to spend time in a government approved quarantine hotel if you have just come from a country on the government’s red list.

The relaxed rules have already taken effect in Scotland and Wales.

Ministers in Northern Ireland are discussing changing their own rules on self-isolation to bring them in line with the rest of the UK.
