David Moyes sends a great message to Newcastle fans that West Ham fans might not have expected

David Moyes praised “amazing” Newcastle United supporters for not “letting their team down” during the opening day defeat to West Ham.

Sunday was the first time a near-complete crowd had returned to St James’s Park since February 2020 – just weeks before the pandemic changed our lives.

Newcastle have since played 25 home games behind closed doors in all competitions but hopefully those days are now a thing of the past with more than 50,000 fans returning for the match against West Ham.

Small fans witnessed Newcastle’s victory over Sheffield United in May and the friendly victory of the Lions and Whites over Norwich earlier this month, but we haven’t seen a presence like this for 533 days.

50,673 fans created great noises before kick-off – his new signature Joe Willock was dazzled when he was introduced to the crowd – and the players certainly fueled that energy.

Indeed, Callum Wilson gave Newcastle a great start against the Hammers after heading his team ahead by just five minutes on the clock.

West Ham eventually won an entertaining match 4-2, and after the match, Moyes was asked how it felt to be standing in front of a packed ground again after his team won.

However, rather than talk about his supporters, the former Sunderland boss has instead shown his side by praising the Newcastle fans.

“Well, I think it was kind of 50,000 Jordi in the beginning and I was looking and thinking to myself, ‘Wow, that’s real,'” the West Ham coach told reporters.

“We stood in the dugout and said, ‘This is what we lost and this is a fantastically supported football team and a fantastic fan base and they didn’t let their team down today.’ The Newcastle supporters were fantastic.”
