Hoo Edwards’ future is in doubt and he admits that he doesn’t think he’ll be giving BBC News at 10 for a long time

BBC news reader Hugh Edwards is considering his future as a presenter for News at Ten as his 60th birthday approaches.

He announced this in an exclusive interview with Radio Simro, saying that he found the evening news to be “taxing.”

“There comes a time when you have to re-evaluate what’s in front of you,” he told broadcaster Dewi Llwyd, noting that his view was “completely normal.”

He added, “Now that we’ve hit a big milestone, and he’s 60, it’s normal for a guy to think ‘Am I going to keep this job for another five years, or do I want to do something different? “.

But in the Welsh interview, he said he was a “natural broadcaster” and wouldn’t give up on everything.

“The nightly news industry, 20 years later, can be taxing, though I still enjoy the job,” he said.

“But I don’t think I’m going to do that for long. Because I think that, in the first place, I think it’s only fair for viewers to get a change.”

“Secondly, I have very talented co-workers — time to give them a chance, too.

“I won’t disappear tomorrow from the ten o’clock bulletin because I’m still enjoying myself,” said Mr. Edwards.

“But I am of course thinking about future business patterns.

“The truth is, I don’t want to maintain these working patterns for a long time to come, because I don’t think it’s a very wise thing at all.”

During the interview, he criticized what he described as the BBC’s “clumsy” handling of the decision to publish salaries for staff earning £150,000 or more a year, calling it a “nightmare”. Latest full salary list here.

Mr Edwards, who ranks fourth on this year’s list of the highest paid employees with wages ranging from £465,000 to £469,999, said it had been “extremely tough” for him.

“It pissed me off, to be honest,” he said. “It’s not because I’m embarrassed about the salary, especially because I got a huge cut years ago anyway.

“I don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for me. But if you take a big reduction in your salary, it will surely affect you, your psyche and your attitude towards work.

“Especially if you see co-workers getting big pay increases and you don’t understand why.”
