Germany should evacuate up to 100,000 from Afghanistan, Angela Merkel warns
Germany must urgently evacuate up to 10,000 people from Afghanistan of responsibility, Chancellor Angela Merkel told her party colleagues, warning that the repercussions of the conflict will continue for a very long time.
The remarks, made at a closed-door meeting of her Christian Democratic Party on Monday and relayed by participants in the meeting, reflect growing concern about the bloodshed in Afghanistan after the Taliban seized the capital and declared peace.
“We are going through difficult times,” Merkel said. “Now we must focus on the rescue mission.”
Merkel said those in need of evacuation included 2,500 Afghan support staff as well as rights activists, lawyers and others the government sees as at risk if they stay in the country, up to 10,000 in all.
She also said that Berlin should cooperate with Afghanistan’s neighbors to support those fleeing now, adding: “This topic will keep us busy for a very long time.”
