Joe Root took the blame for England’s defeat to India in the second Test at Lords, saying he got it wrong on tactical matters as his side slipped 1-0 in the five-game series.
England looked the favorites to win when Ole Robinson sent off dangerous Rishabh Pant and valet Ishant Sharma early on the fifth day to leave India 209-8 and lead only 182.
However, India’s No. 9 and No. 10, Muhammad Shami (56 score) and Jaspreet Pomrah (34 score), cracked next in a standing position of the ninth wicket of 89 as England essentially continued their short deliveries without success.
India captain Virat Kohli announced shortly after lunch and set England’s goal at 272 out of 60 for the victory, before the hosts collapsed to 120 all around 51.5, with tailor Mohammed Siraj scoring his second of four match points as a tourist. He won with 151 points.

England captain Root, who went out to Pomera for 33 in his side’s second round, said: “I think a lot falls on my shoulder as a captain. Tactically I could have done things a little differently.
“the [Shami and Bumrah partnership] It was the pivotal moment of the match, no doubt, and I don’t think I handled that very well tactically. We have been put in a difficult situation.
“Looking back, I was looking at some of the field pitches and the way we were playing. We could have looked at attacking the stumps a little bit more frequently and using the short ball as a surprise more.
“We have to give them some credit. They scored in unusual areas and made it difficult to define traditional areas and you were trying to tackle the ports but without letting the game slip away from us.
“But I would have taken more time and probably brought more throwing patterns into the game sooner.
Mohamed El-Shami hit six to reach fifty from just 57, as he scored 89 with his colleague Gaspreet Boumera.

“As the ball got softer, it didn’t seem to move sideways like with the newer ball, but we may have underestimated the importance of challenging a lower-level player’s defense.”
England then suffered an all-too-familiar crash in strikes, losing openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley to the Ducks with Root coming in fourth in second.
Root and Joss Butler (25) and Moen Ali (13) were the only players to reach double figures, with the other two top seven members, Haseeb Hamid and Jonny Birstow, making nine and two, respectively.
The root average is 128.66 in the series but the next highest average English batsman is Bairstow, at just 29.50.
“I was expecting us to come out so it’s disappointing we didn’t make it,” said the Root. “Credit to India but I don’t think there is any hiding from the fact that we need to improve.”
Rory Burns went out for the duck in the first round of England’s second innings, with opening partner Dom Sibley sent off without a goal.

“We need to achieve higher results. The guys will know that. They work very hard. We need to be better at building great partnerships.”
“We did it well for periods in this match in the first rounds but we need to do it longer and make it last. We also need to be better at starting turns, finding a path to the match.
“India have been a very good team for a long period of time. I think we are in a slightly different situation. We are trying to get to where they are. We need to find ways to improve.”
The third test takes place at Emerald Headingley in Leeds from August 25 and Root urged his team to use the time in between to learn from their “mistakes” and come back refreshed as the series survives.

He added: “I feel just like anyone in the dressing room. It was a missed opportunity as we could have gone ahead and win this match.
“There are three games left in this series and a lot could happen. We’ve found ourselves in similar situations before and are at the top.
“It’s really important that we learn from what we did well and the mistakes we made and show Headingley ready to go and win that match.
“We have to take this week and then come back refreshed and ready to go again. We need to stay calm. It’s not time to panic.”
Watch the first day of the third Test between England and India, from Emerald Headingley, live on Sky Sports Cricket and Sky Sports Main Event from 10am on Wednesday 25 August.
