It wasn’t all bad news for Manchester City, Liverpool’s title contender, over the weekend.
Sure enough, their defense in the tournament got off to a miserable start with a poor 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Admittedly, they saw title contenders Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United start the campaign with certain victories.
But Pep Guardiola could find solace in his Mancon purses to set a stunning new record by including him in the most expensive starting squad in Premier League history.
The 11 players sold out in London were bought for a staggering total of £528m – making the average price per player £48m.

For some context, Liverpool have only spent that amount on three players in their history.
The nine-man bench was bought against Tottenham for around £350m, and with Guardiola keen to spend more than £100m on Harry Kane, the numbers will go up even more.
In the shadow of just over £438m, Jurgen Klopp’s most expensive Liverpool squad could hardly suggest the Reds are poor.
But this more expensive seat then houses nearly £124m of talent, underscoring the fact that the spending gap against City really does lie.
So who is the most expensive side in Liverpool?
Goalkeeper – Alisson Becker (65 million pounds).
Liverpool briefly made Alisson the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when they took him from Roma. Caoimhin Kelleher came out of the ranks while Adrian was a free transfer, costing Loris Karius £4.7m.
Right-back – Trent Alexander-Arnold (Freeman)
Both Alexander Arnold and alternate Nico Williams are alumni of the academy.
Central Defenders – Virgil van Dijk (£75m), Ibrahima Konate (£36m).
Van Dijk is now back on the court after more than nine months on the sidelines, while summer signing Konate is still waiting on the Reds’ competitive bracket.
Joe Gomez cost just £6m from Charlton Athletic, Ben Davies £500,000 while Joel Matip was free, Nat Phillips and Reese Williams both graduated from the academy.

Left-back – Kostas Tsimikas (£11.75m).
Tsimikas had to wait more than 12 months to make their Premier League debut on Saturday in Norwich, while the famous Andy Robertson cost just £10m in the end.
Midfielders: Naby Keita (£52.75m), Fabinho (£43.7m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£35m).
Keita remains the third most expensive player in Liverpool history having arrived in the same summer with Fabinho, with Oxlade-Chamberlain now in his fifth season at the club.
Thiago Alcantara (£27.4m) and Jordan Henderson (£16m) weren’t cheap while Xherdan Shaqiri was priced at £13.75m, James Milner was a free transfer and Curtis Jones was a local talent.
Forwards – Diogo Jota (£45m), Mohamed Salah (£43.9m), Sadio Mane (£30m)
Both Mane and Salah have long proven to be bargains despite the expensive expenses, while Liverpool are hoping Jota will prove the same. It cost Roberto Firmino £29m, Divock Origi £9.8m, Takumi Minamino £7.25m and could end up costing Harvey Elliott £4.3m.
Subs: Karius (£4.7m), Robertson (£10m), Gomez (£6m), Thiago (£27.4m), Henderson (£16m), Shaqiri (£13.75m), Firmino (£29m), Origi £9.8m. ), Minamino (£7.25 million).
