WEST PALM BEACH, FL – A Haitian orphanage with links to South Florida is still in place, and no one was hurt in the wake of Saturday’s devastating earthquake, according to the foundation’s president.

The earthquake could be felt miles away, including at “British House,” an orphanage for 66 children.

Len Gengel discusses his passion for helping Haiti after the death of his daughter more than a decade ago.

“We are an international non-profit organisation. We are an orphanage built in the name of our daughter Britney,” said Britney’s father and Be Like Brit Foundation President Lynn Gingell.

The orphanage has an area of 19,000 square feet and houses 33 boys and 33 girls in recognition of the 33 days the Briton went missing under the rubble of a collapsed hotel.

Britney Gingel’s father was at the orphanage when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake on Saturday struck the area.

Surveillance video shows children at the British House orphanage running for safety when they feel an earthquake.

“It was around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, we were working on building transitional housing,” said Lin Jungle. “The only way I could describe it was like a wave, and it went up and down and up and down. And your reaction is to run but there’s nowhere to run to because everything is moving.”

Children and staff took refuge under a mango tree.

“[Len] On a construction site, and I knew there was construction going on, so I thought, “What’s going on over there that they’re shaking this building right here?” “When I stood up to go see what was going on, I felt the big wave,” said Tatiana Jean-Louis, transition manager for older teens at Pritz Home.

Jungle said the orphanage building was not structurally damaged.

“We are committed to raising the next generation of leaders in Haiti, and that’s our focus. After two years of building the orphanage…I realized that the only way to truly help Haiti was from the inside out,” Gingell said.
