The latest long-range weather forecast from the BBC forecasts a rise in high pressure across the UK by the end of this month which could push temperatures towards the mid-20s. The possibility of a heat wave is reflected in the latest weather charts from Netweather, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 25 degrees Celsius on August 24. It would be marginally lower at 24°C in East Anglia the day before, before rising by 24 hours and reaching a high of 25°C in London.

During this time, temperatures are set to reach 27°C in northern France, indicating that the range of high pressure and increasingly warm air is approaching the UK.

For the period August 23-29, BBC Weather said on its website that the Atlantic weather fronts would be veering north towards Iceland rather than moving to the UK from the west.

This range of higher pressure will also increase the temperature of the upper air, with temperatures expected to be “well above average on many days”.

BBC Weather said on its website: “For the last full week of summer meteorology, once the weekend dip moves away we expect pressure to rise across the UK.

“This will keep the weather more stable and generally have summer weather.

“The winds will be light with the Atlantic weather fronts drifting north towards Iceland rather than moving into the UK from the west.

“Because the higher pressure sits in the air longer, it will help warm the air stuck in the upper position, so we expect temperatures to be above average over a wide range for several days.”

This increased hot air also increases the chances of a heatwave scorching the country and almost mirrors what happened in July, when high pressure sat in the sky and a moderately warm air mass slowly heated up.

But if this group of high pressure moves toward Germany, they will be the ones to experience a “gradual warming effect,” which will see the winds get a little stronger and shift to the southwest, bringing in some tropical air from the Atlantic.

This will still be a warm pattern, but unlikely to hit heatwave dimensions unless winds move from the south and travel from Spain.

BBC Weather concluded: “We have high confidence in higher pressure and above-average temperatures, but lower confidence in how high the temperature will be because this would be very sensitive to the exact altitude position.

“It’s likely to be one of the three cases, with hot southwest winds being the least likely of the three with only a 10 percent chance. The chances of a southwesterly tropical wind being about 25 percent.”

For August 22-31, the Met Office said, “Temperatures are likely to remain near or above average, with warm spells likely at times.”

But the forecast also warns: “Confidence is low to start this period, with uncertainties in the details of the low pressure area potentially responsible.

“Unstable at first, especially in the south, with heavy rain and rain on Sunday.

“Conditions should become more stable next week, with lots of dry weather with occasional sunny spells.

“These more stable conditions can last all week, but rain and rain may develop again.

“This is most likely towards the south with rain more likely from the west.

“The wind is likely to be light at the beginning of the period before increasing perhaps during the week, especially if the unstable weather is coming from the west.”
