Ahead of the House of Commons debate this morning, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged the government to increase its absorption of the number of Afghan refugees allowed to seek refuge in the UK.
The government has proposed resettling 20,000 people over the next seven years with 5,000 of those coming in the first year under the Afghan Nationals Resettlement Scheme.
Sir Ed told BBC Breakfast: “My concern is that the government is only proposing to resettle 5,000 over the next year or so.
“The Liberal Democrats think it should be 20,000 over the next year.
“We know that hundreds of thousands of people are putting their lives at risk.
“Britain needs to play a role with other countries, and we need to play an urgent role.
“That’s why the Liberal Democrats said, as a minimum, we should take in 20,000 people over the next year.
“The government’s commitment to 20,000 in the long run, whatever that may be.
“So in the House of Commons we will put pressure on the government to do more and work with our neighbors in Europe and elsewhere, so there is a real international effort.”
