Everton now want Nottingham Forest’s Matty Longstaff

Matty Longstaff is a target of Nottingham Forest but is also wanted by Everton, according to a print edition of The Mirror (page 54).

The Newcastle United midfielder has fallen out of favor under Steve Bruce. He made only five Premier League matches last season and was often not in the squad.

Now, the manager is ready to let him go on loan. Several league clubs are keen to sign him, with Forest, Sheffield United and Huddersfield believed to be in the mix.

Longstaff earns £24,000 a week and any team that decides to take him to the tournament will likely need a hand at such a salary.

Maybe Everton won’t. Rafa Benitez is keen to raid his club. The youngest of the Longstaff brothers was only coming through the ranks when the Spaniard was in charge of St James’ Park.

It seems odd that Everton want the younger Longstaff. Benitez gave his brother Sean his Newcastle debut, but considering how long it’s been since Matty played, the move seems odd.

Jungle’s chances of getting a Longstaff seem slim

Given that Forrest has not started the season particularly well and the group of clubs interested, the chances of Longstaff to shine at the City Ground appear slim.

In fact, if Benitez wants it and is willing to take a chance, it could become a forced consequence.

A tournament loan would be ideal for Longstaff. At the moment, he needs to play football and Forrest could certainly benefit from being in the midfield engine room.

James Garner is still a target, although it is unclear at this point what Manchester United will do with him.

Longstaff would be a decent alternative. However, Everton’s interest could leave Forest helpless, and it could well be a return to the drawing board.
