Ratings of West Bromwich Albion players against Sheffield United as Furlong tortures and impresses you Mowat

West Bromwich Albion demolished presumed promotional rival Sheffield United 4-0 at The Hawthorns in an evening of long-distance goal-and-throwing entertainment.

Jack Robinson’s own goal (another defender couldn’t handle Darnell Furlong’s diabolical kicks in the penalty area) gave Bages the lead in the first half, before a lightning three-goal attack within 12 minutes from Dara O’Shea, Alex Mowat and Callum Robinson resolved things very quickly.

There was a clean sheet to boot too!

Albion, who was without Kenneth Flowers after his Saturday appearance did little to impress his boss Valerian Ismail, got off to a fast start. The fans welcomed kicks in the deep areas of the field like corner kicks, because at Darnell Furlong they have a one-way aerial entry into the penalty area which terrifies the defenders.

Luton’s Cal Naismith couldn’t handle one, and here it was the unfortunate Robinson who directed the ball away from reserve goalkeeper Michael Verbis, who was called up to cover for the soon-to-be-departed Aaron Ramsdale.

Albion must have been ahead of their target, the Mind. Well, if Callum Robinson stuck with his streak. Evidently eager to perform against his former employers, whose fans did little to enrich him, Robinson made one long shot past Ferris, only to have the flag fly properly, then finished the match in style after Kyle Bartley’s header found him over the defense.

On that occasion, it was Bartley who was sentenced to foul on the Sheffield United defender in the fight, but replays suggested Pages’ center back was a tough one.

Right after the hosts pushed themselves to the front, though, they could easily concede. Bartley was caught under the ball and turned away by Billy Sharp, before playing in striker partner David McGoldrick.

All the Ireland international had to do, having controlled the ball, was to take a corner kick after the rushing Johnston, but instead turned around – to rest everything inside The Hawthorns – past the post. McGoldrick hit the grass angrily.

Albion ended the evening as a heated contest after the start of the second half. 47th minute – bang, goal. 53rd minute – bang, goal. 59th minute – bang, goal. Consider the Broome road really good and interesting. The rest of the hawthorn too, for that matter.

Verrips’ weak goal was at the Blades out at sea as Furlong continued to throw balls into the penalty area. Turns out they have a towel in Woodman Corner for him, too.

It was a great corner kick from Mowatt that brought the decisive second. O’Shea couldn’t miss the ball when the ball fell in front of him and rushed home into the crowd.

Tonight’s goal came moments later. This is Val-ball at its best. Robinson wrestled the ball back to the edge of his territory, and squared it to Grant. The striker didn’t need a second call to slip into Mwat, who sprinted forward, collected the pass and finished beautifully.

It was four o’clock before the clock. Denied by a double whistle in the first period, Robinson was not so here and devoured his third goal in as many games after Ferribs failed to tackle another long throw.

This was a memorable night at The Hawthorns, and most importantly it sent a serious message that Albion means business.

He may have received advice from Jordan Pickford while with England, but Johnston appears to have developed a knack for racing off his streak to remove any danger when and when. Perhaps he was bored, although he managed to save a good one.

Furlong 9 *

His long throws proved to be a dangerous weapon in Albion’s arsenal. He shoots them so fast and the defenders have no idea how to prepare for them. His corners also caused problems, although he missed the ball one defense and was knocked out by O’Shea, who nailed Sharp with a perfect tackle. I made a new friend at Halford’s Lane.

Oshi 9

O’Shea has been one of Albion’s standout players this season so far, and both against Bournemouth and Luton deserved more with two clean sheets. Anyway, he did one vital challenge on Sharp as he prepared to pull the trigger. He has another goal to his credit as well! He even served a stint in midfield upon death.

First half shaky. He was caught immediately after Albion took the lead and succumbed to the ball making McGoldrick howl, but he led things off in the second half. Dominating in the air, he showed his physical superiority to take down one-on-one with Burke.

Clark 9

It looks elegant the more you watch it. Positioning gets better and better, it’s a valuable asset in the opponent’s penalty area on long throws. Quietly on the ball, Clarke played his way out of football and cut potential Sheffield United attacks at the source.

Townsend 8

Townsend, who was wearing a bandage on his head after his Saturday troubles, was formidable here down the left. You may have felt the effects of the blow to the head, but you wouldn’t have known it because it kept giving 100%. A great cross from the corner should have returned the decisive pass but Furlong missed his chance.

Livermore 7

Tigerish is in the fight, as is, winning crucial 50-50s in midfield to hold the pressure, but his pass wasn’t enough to scratch and sometimes you want to see a little more calm. A big turnaround though, against a three-man midfield who boasted a stylish Berg.

He has already emerged as a summer signing, a real no-nonsense player who knew all about Val-ball. Uncompromising energy levels let him roam, a dangerous left foot of set-pieces and a tasty finish to declare himself at the front of the Brummie Road.

There are certainly a few gears Diangana can go through, to get back to the level he was in this division two years ago, but this was another encouraging step in the right direction. He only played a little over 50 minutes, getting to know the system and requirements.

A bit like against Luton, Grant had slots where you’d hope he’d take a shot, but he refused. The only key pass he made was, though, a beautifully cushioned pass that Mowat rushed into and scored from. Another good turn from Grant, who worked tirelessly down the left.

Robinson 7

The ball was in the net twice – the second was a perfect finish – in the first half, but neither was counted due to fouls and offside. He rushed to play his former employers, but his death in the final third while searching for Grant and Diangana proved difficult. The right place at the right time, like on a Saturday, for a purpose that would have tasted too sweet.

A very strong turn from Phillips, who moved into the center of the striker and moved from where Robinson left off. Albion took to the field in the later stages of the game.
