Arsenal close a £30m deal to sign Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The 23-year-old, who was part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2020, is expected to put up a competition for Bernd Leno and was Mikel Arteta’s first goal in goalkeeping this summer.

The proposed deal for Ramsdale is worth an initial £24m, plus £6m in performance-related add-ons. It is understood that Arteta is keen to add a group of young players with personality to develop his watch. Arsenal have already signed defender Ben White for £50m from Brighton, while the transfer of Norway midfielder Martin Odegaard is also believed to be in progress.

Ramsdale was left out of Sheffield United’s squad after Wednesday’s loss to West Bromwich Albion. Bournemouth will cash in on the benefit after including a 15% sale clause when they sold the goalkeeper to Sheffield United for £18.5m last year.

After the 4-0 loss at Hawthorne, United manager Slavisa Jokanovic said: “It’s not really what I want but it’s hard to stop this kind of situation. It’s a huge deal for the club and we’ve been relegated from the Premier League, so it’s hard to say no.”

Arsenal have begun exploring a move for Barcelona goalkeeper Neto after negotiations with Sheffield United reached a dead end, with the championship club asking for nearly £40m. But talks have accelerated this week and Ramsdale could even score in time for Arsenal’s game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Last week, Arsenal brought 19-year-old goalkeeper Karl Hain off the bench after their opening game defeat to Brentford, with substitute goalkeeper Alex Renarsson injured.
