A British engineer who studied in Newcastle was found dead with all his family on a hiking trail in the United States.

Rescue teams in Northern California on Tuesday found Jonathan Grech, 45, his wife Elaine Chung, 31, and their one-year-old daughter, Moggi.

Their bodies were found near an area known as Devil’s Gulch in Southfork in the Merced River along with their pet dog – but the cause of death is not yet clear.

Originally from Lancaster, Lancashire, Mr. Gresh studied at Newcastle University before working in London, and worked as an engineer at Google in America.

The couple used to live in San Francisco but recently moved to Mariposa, the county where the bodies were found.

They had been missing for three days before being discovered the day after their car was found near the gateway to the Sierra National Forest.

Reports indicate that they were found in an area too far away to have a mobile phone signal.

Because of the location of mines in the area and the ongoing mystery surrounding the family’s death, Deputy Kristi Mitchell, of the local mayor’s office, said the area was being treated as a “hazardous” (hazardous materials) scene.

“When you come across a scene where everyone gets involved, including the deceased family dog, it’s not an ordinary thing we’ve seen or seen by other agencies,” she said.

The officer could not rule out carbon monoxide as the cause of death.

“That’s why we’re treating it as a serious condition. We just don’t know,” she added.

“This is one of the many explanations why we treat it as a serious condition.”

In 2013, two gold and silver miners in Colorado died after being exposed to lethal ranges of carbon monoxide, and 19 others became ill.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the tragic scene in which the family was found “does not indicate a clear picture of what happened or a clear cause of death.”

“This is not the outcome we want or the news we want to deliver, my heart goes out to their families,” said Sheriff Jeremy Brace.

“Our Mayor and Staff Chaplains work with their families and will continue to support them during this heartbreaking time.”
