A five-year-old boy, who was shot from a hotel window in Sheffield, was an Afghan refugee who had been in the country for a few days after fleeing the Taliban with his family.
The boy was pronounced dead on Wednesday afternoon after falling from the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel. He was staying at the hotel with his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters after the local authority placed him there.
His family is believed to have been granted asylum in the UK because his father had been working with the British authorities in Afghanistan prior to the withdrawal of the Allied forces.
A member of the local Afghan community, Zabi, said they were trying to support the family along with specially trained officers from the South Yorkshire Police.
Another refugee who was also staying at the hotel claimed the boy had arrived in Sheffield four days earlier, although it is not clear how long he had been in the UK. He said, “They came here to save their lives and now this has happened. It’s sad.”
The boy is believed to have fallen from a window at the back of the hotel into the parking lot below.
One of the guests said, “I heard a loud noise and then a few seconds later I heard the mother screaming: My son.”
Sheffield City Council has confirmed it supports the Home Office’s plan to resettle those who supported British forces in Afghanistan and found their lives in danger after the Taliban took control of the country.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The boy’s family is being supported by specially trained officers. No official identification has yet been established. Officers are now appealing to anyone with information to come forward.”
