Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright believes Bruno Fernandes’ performance for Manchester United against Leeds United last weekend will be a warning to the rest of the Premier League.
The Portugal international, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, made his dream start to the new season, scoring a hat-trick to seal an unforgettable 5-1 win on the opening day for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Fernandes – who scored 28 goals in all competitions for United last season – scored the goal that put United ahead 1-0 in the first half before scoring his team’s third and fourth goals, respectively, to seal an unforgettable win over Leeds.
His performance was nothing short of exciting and he has sent a message to the returning faithful at Old Trafford that they will enjoy what he brings to the table this season.
Today’s match expert, Wright, believes Fernandes was proclaiming himself to the fans, as he revealed how annoying the trio, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood, are for the rest of the league.
“What I saw from Bruno Fernandes was someone playing the match as if he was giving everyone a taste of what he could do without the fans there,” Wright told The Ringer.
“When the fans came, the guy just moved on to another level of performance. It was like he was saying, ‘I’m declaring myself now.'”
“He and Pogba. What I saw from them and from Greenwood and the whole Man United team, it was another team that said, ‘We’re here to play now.'” We’re here to celebrate.”
