More than 1,500 police were deployed on the streets of Sydney on Saturday and common roads and some public transport routes to the city center were closed to prevent a planned anti-lockdown demonstration.
“Public safety is our number one priority and you will be fined or arrested if you attend,” NSW Police said in a statement on its Twitter account, adding that the protest was unauthorized and threatened to spread Covid-19.
Sydney, a city of more than 5 million people, has been under a strict lockdown for weeks now, and is struggling to contain the delta-variable outbreak, which has now caused cases in other towns and cities across Australia as well as in New Zealand.
Australian media reported that a similar protest was planned in Melbourne, which is also a city of more than 5 million people and is in its sixth lockdown since the start of the pandemic.
On Saturday, officials reported a total of 886 cases in New South Wales and Victoria, the bulk of them in Sydney.
