Experts fear the Taliban will allow terrorist groups like al-Qaeda to use Afghanistan as a base (Images: Getty Images)
Security experts have warned that the UK will become a target of terrorist attacks now that Afghanistan is ruled by the Taliban.
Osama bin Laden planned the devastating al-Qaeda attacks on 9/11 while the terrorist group used “uncontrolled spaces” in the Afghan deserts and mountains for training.
The Taliban, which now controls military equipment and weapons in Afghanistan, allowed al-Qaeda to remain in the country as guests before and after the 2001 attacks.
Now many different intelligence experts fear that the country will once again become a safe haven for the terrorist organization.
The former British military commander who served in Afghanistan, Colonel Richard Kemp, told The Mirror: “There is a potential for 9/11 to be spectacular, on government buildings, sports stadiums, and prime targets.
If they can’t get the US, the UK remains a big target. Freedom in Afghanistan, as we saw on 9/11, will give them time and help plan such an attack.
Similar warnings were echoed by Ahmed Masoud, a Sandhurst-educated commander of the Afghan National Resistance Front.
He said the Taliban’s recent victory is not just a problem for Afghans that the West can ignore.
“Conspiracies against democracies will come here again,” he said from his hideout in the mountains.

But many are also concerned about the “psychological impact” that Taliban control will have on jihadists already in the UK.
Colonel Richard Kemp said: “Extremists see this story unfold and are inspired by it.
They are celebrating the rise of al-Qaeda again and the threat from these people is immediate.
The United States and its allies expelled the Taliban from Afghanistan in 2001 – after spending five years in power implementing harsh Islamic law.
Since then, al-Qaeda has had no base for training and planning from, and the West has not experienced terrorist attacks on a scale similar even to 9/11.
If the Taliban offer Afghanistan to the jihadists again, it will be the first time that radical Islamic extremists can have a “headquarters” since before 9/11.
The Taliban have already released thousands of terrorists from Afghan prisons who are expected to try to join the jihad movements.
“There is still a lot you can do to help the cause of freedom – you are our only hope left,” said Mr. Masoud, speaking directly to those in the West.
