casual activities
Official guidance states that Citizenship and Immigration Canada may “engage in political activities if its participation in them can reasonably be considered incidental to activities that a reasonable person would consider to be carried out in the interest of the community, and which are not in and of themselves incidental to political activities.”
“For example, a CIC that uses a community center for activities that benefit local residents may be able to lobby the local government for a grant to improve the facilities available in the building.”
Stop Funding Hate describes itself as a “community-led campaign” whose “community of support includes people from across British society, united by a shared commitment to overcoming hate and challenging all forms of discrimination”.
The campaign was launched “in the midst of a wave of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim news” and its goal was to “make hate unprofitable”.
cancel culture
But, in their letter to Mr Kwarteng, a copy of which was also sent to Louise Smyth, the regulator of community businesses that care about the community, the MPs stated: “As it continues to spark a culture of cancellation, and pressure on brands to boycott news outlets, we believe it is important to re-establish Assess whether Stop Funding Hate is the type of organization that best represents Britain’s charitable sector.”
They add, “While it is not clear to us, nor to our critics… who the attack on media pluralism is supposed to serve, what we are certain of is that his current tactics run counter to the spirit and letter of Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s legislation on political activity.”
Instead of advocating on behalf of a group in the community, Stop Funding Hate does the exact opposite of what CICs are allowed to do. They proactively advocate against a group in the community, that is, hundreds of thousands of people who follow GB news every day, and 60 percent of residents who don’t want to watch brands engage in a culture of boycotting TV stations.”
Stop Funding Hate did not respond to requests for comment.
