Afghanistan: Intelligence warned me I was on the Taliban list, says one of the fugitives | world News

The lucky ones are those who take to the skies from Kabul.

They leave with their lives – but that’s it.

From safety in Qatar, an Afghan family describes their escape on Tuesday.

In the serious clash outside Kabul airport, a person next to them was shot. Next to their three young children. However, somehow, with two grandparents in a wheelchair, they succeeded.

The father of the family, a high-ranking lawyer, said he was informed by Afghan intelligence services that he was on the target list.

“There were a lot of gunshots,” he said. “The Taliban were shooting in the air trying to spread the people. It’s not easy for the kids to see. They never saw it from that close that someone would shoot an AK-47.

“We saw someone with a bullet in the leg very close to us. I don’t know how the bullet came but he was right next to us. He was bleeding. A lot of people were bleeding from the Taliban when they were trying to get in. We were just lucky.”

They left with clothes on their backs. Everything else is gone. They could not withdraw any money, they left a beautiful home, a successful business, colleagues and friends.

Leaving was not an option this family felt they had. Even before the Taliban arrived in Kabul, the father received several threats.

He spoke to Sky News on condition of anonymity because his hope is to return home one day.

While telling me his story he broke down in tears.

“I couldn’t complete my education without borrowing money from people… I started this practice myself. We quickly became the best law firm in the country.

He said, “I had a lot of money in my account. I would help anyone who asked for help. But then all of a sudden I lost everything.”

“And it’s not easy to start again from scratch. And I don’t really agree with that you’re out, but what do you do now?”

“The kind of life I’m used to, the kind of life I’ve provided for my family, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that again.”

The family was granted asylum in Canada. Even that plan remains elusive. Totally dependent on support at every meal, to transcend every day.

Kids can’t understand why they are here when they have everything they want at home.

While we are talking a cup of tea appears for us. When you get such generous hospitality from people who have nothing, it is a moment of humility and sentimentality.

In the scattered silence of the ocean, children could be heard laughing. They are excited about the camera. oblivious to what they fled.

A generation that never knew the Taliban.

The family now only has each other.

A nation is worried about what comes next.
